Denise Schreiber is an award winning columnist and author from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her gardening background comes from her Italian grandparents, immigrant farmers from Calabria as well as growing up in the garden, pulling out carrots, washing them with the hose and eating them fresh. It was a roundabout journey to becoming a garden writer doing various jobs before finding horticulture as a second career.
A graduate of Community College of Allegheny College and Carlow University, she is currently the greenhouse manager and horticulturist for Allegheny County Parks in Pittsburgh which covers over 12,000 acres of park land. She is responsible for growing over 450,000 plants for the parks and other county facilities as well as speaking and holding classes and other events for the public. Denise is a national speaker, an All-America Selections Trial Judge, an International Certified Arborist, a county fair judge and licensed applicator. She is the Ask the Expert for Pennsylvania Gardener Magazine, Mrs. Know It All of The Organic Gardeners on KDKA radio and the author of Eat Your Roses, Pansies, Lavender and 49 Other Delicious Flowers. In her spare time she just likes to sit out her own garden and watch lightening bugs.
