Feeding America provides low-income individuals and families with the fuel to survive and even thrive. As the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, The Feeding America members supply food to more than 25 million Americans each year, including 9 million children and 3 million seniors. Serving the entire United States, more than 200 member food banks operate 63,000 agencies that address hunger in all of its forms. AmpleHarvest.org
AmpleHarvest.org is a nationwide anti-hunger effort created by Master Gardener (also CNN Hero) Gary Oppenheimer, which enables millions of Americans who grow food in home gardeners to find a local food pantry eager for their garden excess. Nearly 7,200 food pantries across all 50 states are already signed up with more signing up daily. While USDA knows the location of every food bank in the US, AmpleHarvest.org represents the most extensive list of food pantries in captivity. Learn more at ampleharvest.org.
GoodGardeningVideos.org
GGVideos is a nonprofit educational campaign that finds hundreds of evidence-based gardening videos and promotes them on its ad-free website, Youtube channel and via social media. Its mission is to help the public learn to garden successfully and in environmentally responsible ways, and to strengthen the role of Extension universities and other evidence-based garden communicators. Trusted gardening books and websites are also recommended on the website. Further, GGVideos encourages garden communicators to create videos and helps with how-to advice and by finding viewers for their new videos. The team behind GGVideos includes garden communicators and horticulturists from across the U.S. who support accurate gardening information. Learn more at www.goodgardeningvideos.org.
Plant a Row • Grow a Row
Plant a Row • Grow a Row builds on the long-standing tradition of gardeners loving to share their harvest with others. It is a people-helping-people program to assist in feeding the hungry in their own communities. The Grow-A-Row program started in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1986, initiated by Ron and Eunice O’Donovan. This program has been taken up by other Canadian communities such as Edmonton, Alberta, London, Ontario as well as regions in Quebec such as the Laurentians and the Rigaud, Hudson, St. Lazare and Dorion area. Edmonton’s program is spearheaded by the Edmonton Horticultural Society with the support of local businesses. London’s program is under the leadership of London Composts!, a local partnership of businesses, government and non-profit organizations dedicated to raising awareness of the value of composting and compost. In Quebec, the campaign is called Un rang pour ceux qui ont faimand was initiated by La Presse, the television program Fleurs et Jardins, and the Quebec Food Bank Federation. Plant a Row • Grow a Row combines the strength of all of the above initiatives. Through the experience of these communities and their sharing of existing information and communication resources, it is hoped that other places across Canada will establish a Plant a Row • Grow a Row campaign in their own community.
